“Auckland - Last, loneliest, loveliest, exquisite, apart”.

RUDYARD KIPLING The Song of the Cities (1893)

Upper North Island

This quarter of New Zealand, which includes the largest city, Auckland, has over half the country's population. In 1840, the country's founding document The Treaty of Waitangi was signed by Maori chiefs and representatives of the British Crown in the Bay of Islands. At the northern tip of Northland is Cape Reinga, where Maori spirits of the deceased are said to depart for their ancient Polynesian home.

One hour east of Auckland is the Coromandel Peninsula, a delightful but rugged area of forest trails, old gold mines, deserted beaches, and the home of many craftspeople. About three hours' drive southeast of Auckland is Rotorua, the center of traditional Maori culture and geothermal activity in a region of lakes, forests, and volcanic remnants. Further south, in the center of the North Island, is the resort town of Taupo, nestled on the shore of Lake Taupo with a distant view of the brooding volcanoes of magnificent Tongariro National Park.
